YoNaturals on Being Your Child’s Role Model
Author: Laura Rayburn
Your children look up to you. They notice what you wear. They notice what you read. They notice what you watch on TV. They notice what you eat and how you eat it. Yes, for better or for worse, you, as a parent, are influencing your children every day of their lives. And in some cases, the habits that they learn now will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
Keeping that in mind, you may want to consider the impact that your own diet and exercise habits are having on your children’s health. With the prevalence of childhood obesity in this country, it is increasingly important for parents to model healthy lifestyles that their children can emulate. You can have a large effect on the current and future health of your children by implementing healthy changes in your own life. For example, if you emphasize including plenty of fruits and vegetables with your family’s meals now, then you children will grow up with the knowledge that fresh produce is the cornerstone of a healthy diet.
Beyond providing your children with well-balanced meals, you can also influence their physical fitness level by making exercise one of your own daily habits. Taking your children out for walks, jogs, and bike rides as they grow up is an excellent way to have a positive influence on their fitness levels. Also, in addition to making sure that they eat balanced meals, this is another way to protect your children against childhood obesity. Explain to your kids why you place value on good nutrition and daily fitness routines. This information will begin to make more sense as they get older, and they may even want to take on more challenging activities, like hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing. Encourage them in these activities, and go along with them if you can. Who knows, they may end up inspiring you to reach a higher physical fitness level.
Also, although you may be worried about your own weight, it is important to not fret about it in front of your children. Putting too much emphasis on maintaining the perfect figure can have a negative impact on their perception of self. Today’s teens and adolescents are already inundated with ideas about how their body should look, and many will go to great lengths to get such a body. You don’t want to reinforce these ideas, especially while your children are still growing and their bodies are still changing into their adult forms.
As a parent, you won’t be able to do everything and be everything for your child. However, you can positively influence the people that they are becoming. If you want them to be healthy now, and to grow into healthy adults, then make changes to your own diet and exercise routines. And don’t let those good habits go to waste when you leave the house. When you’re on the go, choose snacks from healthy vending machines like YoNaturals. It will be good for you and even better for your children.
